Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen)
Incredible Looks, Superior Sound
Echo Dot (3rd Generation) Review
The third-generation Echo Dot from Amazon looks decent and sounds amazing.
It’s now a slightly better smart speaker than the Google Home Mini, with dramatically enhanced audio, which will replace the larger $99 Echo for less picky folks.
Which makes it our Editor’s Pick for smart speakers at the entry stage. There’s no need to upgrade if you already own an old Echo Dot and use it to fuel a larger, improved speaker.
So if you’re the main speaker using your Echo Dot, you’ll want a new one.

So what was the (3rd Gen) Amazon Echo Dot?
The Echo Dot has always been a common option for smart home control and for filling your home with Alexa gadgets.
The old models had two main issues, they were a little ugly and a little quiet.
With the Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen), Amazon answers these issues, providing an updated smart speaker that is perfect for home access and a little bit of light music or radio.
Technical Details
Echo Dot 3rd Generation with Clock
Amazon has now introduced the latest Echo Dot with Clock since the device was launched, which is essentially the same model except with an LCD screen to demonstrate the actual time.
Side-by-side, all products are available, but it’s a matter of first determining if an Echo Dot is the correct model for you and if it is, which model suits you and your home better.

Echo Dot Setup
Gone is the old version’s plain plastic shell, and the Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen) has a textured content case, which brings it similar to the Google Home Mini in style.
It’s a big upgrade on the original, rather than standing out as a conspicuous piece of tech, enabling the new Dot to fit in with your décor.
Three finishing options are also offered, available in charcoal, grey and sandstone, to further extend the options.
On top, you have the same control as on the previous Echo Dot there are volume buttons, a mic silence button to keep Alexa from listening, and an activation button, just in case the Dot doesn’t want to pick up your voice.
While physical controls are useful to have, most of the time you won’t need them.
Amazon has modified the battery adapter for the Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen) and it is no longer powered by USB.
This is because the current model needs slightly more strength.
The downside is that through a handy USB port, you can not power the speaker on the back of your TV or set-top box.

As Alexa works in the cloud, the 3rd Gen Echo Dot has the same range of features as the other Amazon-powered smart speakers.
A helpful tool is the new Echo Dot, as a general smart assistant.
Alexa will tell you about the upcoming weather for TV shows and movies or give you IMDB scores. You will get details to work out the results with sums or spellings for upcoming appointments.
As far as the basics go, Alexa has you well protected.
Via Amazon Alexa Skills, new capabilities are introduced, with a large amount available via the Alexa app.
May I buy an Echo Dot (3rd Gen) from Amazon?
As Alexa works in the cloud, the 3rd Gen Echo Dot has the same range of features as the other Amazon-powered smart speakers.

Alexa will tell you about the upcoming weather for TV shows and movies or give you IMDB scores. You will get details to work out the results with sums or spellings for upcoming appointments.
As far as the basics go, Alexa has you well protected. The greatest competitor is the Google Nest Micro, which runs Google Assistant.
I find Google Assistant smarter than Alexa for general tasks, but smart home service is currently not quite as good.
And there’s no 3.5mm audio output on the Google Nest Mini if you want to use external microphones.
The Predominant Thinking
In most rooms of your house, the latest Echo Dot is nice enough to be the default Alexa speaker.
It doesn’t sound terribly boring now and it’s half the price of the bigger Echo.
You can conveniently hook it up to a larger speaker of your choice if you want better sound, or align it with another Dot as a stereo pair.
It’s cost-effective, portable, and pleasing, and sounds a lot better than the Google Home Mini.

For an entry-level Alexa speaker, the latest Amazon Echo Dot offers significantly enhanced sound, making it an even better purchase. Our only concern when we tested the second-gen Echo Dot was that its speaker wasn't perfect for listening.
